R. S. 37:854 Continuing Education; requirements; enforcement; exemptions; course approval; provider approval; recordkeeping; fees

Continuing education providers and courses are approved by the Louisiana Board of Embalmers and Funeral Directors for the sole purpose of offering continuing education hours to funeral directors, embalmers, and/or crematory retort operators licensed in Louisiana. Participation in an approved continuing education course does not qualify any person who does not hold a license pursuant to the requirements of L. A. R. S. 37:854.  of the law of Louisiana to engage in any business, profession, or practice regulated and defined in L. A. R. S. 37:854. 

All providers and courses must be Board approved. Funeral Directors, Embalmers, and Crematory Retort Operators are required to complete 4-hours of continuing education per person yearly. Louisiana requires a certification of completion be awarded upon the successful completion of all approved course.

The Board requires licensees to complete Continuing Education prior to their license being renewed. Licensees who are 65 years of age or older and have held a license for 10 years prior to the end of the reporting period are exempt from CE requirements. A licensee who has more than 4 hours of continuing education in a renewal period, may carry over a maximum of 8 hours to the next renewal period.

Courses that are for academic credit by a Mortuary Science College approved by the American Board of Funeral Service Education shall be approved unless the course is taken to obtain licensure as a Funeral Director, Embalmer or Crematory Retort Operator.

Submit and View Continuing Education (CE) Credits

To SUBMIT CE Credits:

Licensees may submit CE credits by doing one of the following:

  • Online Submission:
    Sign in to your account and submit CE courses you have attended.

  • Email or Fax Submission:
    CE credits may also be submitted by email or fax by either the licensee or the CE provider.

    Please Note: These submissions require additional processing time as Board staff must manually enter the CE credits into the system.

  • Board-Granted Credits:
    Any CE credits awarded by the Board for attending a Board Meeting or Committee Meeting will be automatically added to the licensee’s account by the Board.


VIEW CE Credits:

Licensees may view their CE credits by doing one of the following:

  • Online Access:
    Sign in to your account and click on [Insert Appropriate Link or Section Name Here] to view your current CE credits.

  • Email or Fax Request:
    A request for verification of CE credits may be submitted via email or fax to the Board.
